The misconception
The biggest objection people have to oil cleansing is that the oil will clog their pores and make their face look greasy. It's a reasonable thing to believe. We've been told for decades that oil is the enemy of clear skin, that the goal is "squeaky clean," and that anything short of that means you didn't wash well enough.
That squeaky feeling is your skin's lipid barrier being stripped away, not a sign of cleanliness.
Your skin's outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is your first line of defense against bacteria, environmental damage, and moisture loss. When conventional cleansers strip that layer repeatedly, it signals the skin to overproduce sebum to compensate. The "clean beauty" industry largely replaces one set of synthetic ingredients with another. A label that says "natural" or "plant-based" can still contain fragrance, silicones, PEG compounds, and industrially refined plant oils with no nutritional value. No plant oil replicates this combination with the same proportions. Jojoba is a liquid wax ester, not a triglyceride, so its structure is different from sebum even if it's well-tolerated. Olive oil is oleic-heavy but has a moderate-to-high comedogenic rating for some skin types and varies wildly in quality. Castor oil has useful drawing properties but becomes drying when used alone. Sunflower and safflower oils are high in linoleic acid, not oleic, and most commercial versions are heavily refined.
Tallow contains the same building blocks your skin already uses. Your skin recognizes those fatty acids because it produces them itself, which is what biocompatibility means in practice.6
Fat-soluble vitamins. Tallow contains vitamins A, D, E, and K in fat-soluble form, which means your skin can actually absorb and use them. Most plant oils, especially refined versions, have had those nutrients processed out. Grass-fed tallow specifically contains higher concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and fat-soluble vitamins than tallow from conventionally raised cattle.6 That's why sourcing matters, and it's why we source our tallow from a rancher we can actually identify by name.
Oxidative stability. Plant oils are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). PUFAs oxidize quickly when exposed to heat, light, and air, including the warmth of your skin. Rancid oil on your face isn't a theoretical problem; it's what happens when you use an unstable oil as a daily cleanser. Tallow is low in PUFAs, which makes it significantly more stable. It doesn't go rancid on your skin the way a high-PUFA plant oil does.7
Comedogenic rating. Tallow sits low on the comedogenic scale. It doesn't clog pores. This surprises people because the conventional belief is that animal fat is heavy and pore-blocking. In practice, the skin-compatible fatty acid profile means it absorbs and works with the skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Ancestral use. Humans cleaned and protected their skin with animal fats for most of recorded history. Romans, medieval Europeans, and many indigenous cultures used rendered animal fats as their primary skin treatment, long before synthetic detergent cleansers existed. The 20th century swap to petroleum-derived surfactants and synthetic preservatives is the anomaly, not the tradition. How to do it
The oil cleansing method is simple. The most important thing is not rushing the massage step, which is where the actual cleansing happens.
Step 1. Start with a dry face. Don't wet your skin first.
Step 2. Apply a small amount of oil to your fingertips, roughly the size of a dime to a quarter.
Step 3. Massage it into your skin using circular motions for one to two minutes. Cover your full face, including around your nose, forehead, and chin. The massage loosens sebum, sunscreen, makeup, and buildup.
Step 4. Wet a clean washcloth with warm water. Not hot. Press it gently against your face for 10 to 15 seconds.
Step 5. Wipe the oil away gently. Don't scrub. Rinse the cloth and repeat once if needed.
Step 6. Pat dry. Your skin should feel clean but not tight. If it feels tight, that's the sign of a cleanser stripping your barrier. With a biocompatible oil, you shouldn't feel that.
One note on DIY vs. soap bars. The classic oil cleansing method calls for straight oil applied and removed with a warm cloth. That works. But if you're already washing with a tallow soap bar, the method is different and in our view, better. A quality tallow soap bar cleans without stripping the skin's oil. You're not removing sebum and leaving skin bare; you're preserving the oils that belong there.
